This way, you know for sure what ingredients to use and you can determine the quantities yourself. You might not like all that fatty cheese you often get when you order pizza or the fact that it is too salty, or it doesn’t have enough tomato sauce.

A homemade pizza eliminates all these small inconveniences, but most importantly, it allows you to choose reliable and quality ingredients. Whether you want to get the most expensive cheese or only ingredients that come from trustworthy organic sources, there is nothing stopping you.

What ingredients do you need for a home-made pizza?

The list of ingredients you will use depends, of course, on the type of pizza you want to make. If you want to treat your family with a tasty 4 formaggi pizza, you won’t use any meat, but you will need 4 different cheese varieties.

If you want to impress them with a capricciosa, you will still need cheese, but also tomatoes, ham, mushrooms, basil, and artichoke. Tuna pizza requires tuna, onion, pepper, and olives. Vegetarian pizza normally contains zucchinis, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, olives, basil, yellow pepper, and garlic.

Margherita pizza, the first pizza in history, which was made in Italy and named after Queen Margherita of Savoy, requires the following ingredients: tomato sauce, basil, mozzarella, tomato passata,and oregano. All of the above will also need salt and, based on your preferences, you can choose to add black pepper or not.

However, things do get a little bit complicated if you want to learn how to make your own dough. This is why many people prefer to buy a pre-made crust. 

If you don’t want to spend at least 20-30 minutes making your own dough, you can buy a premade crust and all that is left to do is put the ingredients on top and bake it.

This is definitely a fast and practical solution; however, some people complain that premade crust is never as tasty as a fresh dough you’ve just made that day. Also, in many cases, the texture of the crust might feel too rough compared to the natural crunchiness of the homemade crust.

If, on the other hand, you want to prepare the dough yourself, you will need to get ingredients for it as well. The recipes might slightly vary, but in general, you will need the following products: flour, dough, baking yeast, salt, sugar, olive oil, and water.

Finally, to be able to make your homemade pizza, you will need an oven where you can bake it and a pan that is suitable for this dish. Additionally, there are different tools you can purchase if you want to ease the whole process of making homemade pizza.

Here is a short list of the tools you’ll need for pizza:

A pizza wheel – that small but highly efficient tool that can help you cut the pizza fast is a must; if you struggle to do this with a knife, it simply won’t be that easy.

A scale – it will help you easily measure the quantity of your ingredients with precision; moreover, it is quite useful as you will surely use it for other dishes as well. 

A wooden pizza peel – this instrument will help you put the pizza in the oven while eliminating the likelihood that the dough sticks to its surface. Additionally, you can also get a metal one which is more useful when taking the pizza out of the oven.

How to make home-made pizza?

The first step in making your homemade pizza is making the dough. To do this, you begin by putting the yeast in warm water and letting it sit for a few minutes and then stir until the yeast is dissolved.

Afterward, you add the flour, sugar, salt, and olive oil and mix them (either manually or, even easier, with a mixer). When you are done, the dough should have a sticky feel, and in case it feels too wet, you can add a little bit more flour to it.

The next step is letting the dough rise. For this, you will need a bowl and, before you put the dough there, you can spread a bit of oil inside. After putting the dough inside, move the bowel left and right so that oil gets on all the dough’s sides. 

Then comes the fermentation process. The time you allow the dough to rise may vary. Some let it ferment for 24 h and others for as little as 30 minutes. If you are in a hurry, you don’t need to wait for hours. However, as a general rule, the more you let the dough rise, the richer the crust’s flavor will be.

If you want to let it rise only for a short time, cover the bowl with plastic wrap and put it in a place at a warm temperature, ideally around 75°F – 85°F (23-25 °C). Conversely, if you want to let the dough rise for a long time, you should put it in the refrigerator.

After the dough is ready, sprinkle flour on a flat surface, put the dough there, and push it a bit so that it becomes flat. Then, start preparing the filling ingredients so that you have everything at hand. Afterward, take the dough and start stretching it and flattening it on the flour-covered surface.

Start stretching it from the center and press it with your fingers. After you get to the desired size, let it rest for 5 minutes. Before you start putting the ingredients on the pizza, put the dough on the pizza peel, and brush the top with olive oil.

The first layer you normally use is the tomato sauce and, afterward, add your desired ingredients and spices. Afterward, slide the pizza into the oven that should have previously been preheated. Let it bake until the crust becomes brown. After approximately 10-15 minutes, the pizza should be ready.

A homemade pizza can be challenging, but once you’ve managed to get it right, you will surely want to do this again and again, especially if there is somebody special you can share it with.
